Shanti Mantras (Peace Mantras)

These three mantras come from the Upanishads and ask for peace, light and harmony. Many people recite them to begin the day or before study.

Asato Ma Sadgamaya

Meaning: Lead me from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.

Purnamadah Purnamidam

Meaning: That is whole and this is whole. From the whole the whole arises, and when the whole is taken from the whole, the whole remains.

Sahana Vavatu

Meaning: May he protect us both together and nourish us both together. May we work together with great energy. May our study be bright and effective, and may we never hate one another. Om peace, peace, peace.

Source and note

The Sanskrit is from Wikisource and in the public domain. Asato Ma Sadgamaya is from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28), Purnamadah is the peace invocation of the Isha Upanishad, and Sahana Vavatu is recited in the Krishna Yajurveda Upanishad tradition. The meanings are in our own words.
