Rashi by Name

Type a name in English letters and see which Rashi its first syllable belongs to.

How this works

Vedic tradition divides the zodiac into 108 equal Padas of 3°20′ each. Every Pada has a starting sound, and every Rashi holds exactly nine Padas. A name that begins with one of those sounds points to that Rashi.

Why some names match two signs

Some sounds, such as Ta, Ti, Tu, Te, To, Na, Tha, Da, Di, Du, De and Do, appear in more than one Rashi, because English spelling merges Devanagari letters that are different (ट and त, ड and द, ठ and थ). If you can write the name in Devanagari, the Hindi tool gives a single sign. For those names the name alone cannot decide. Your real Rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, so use the birth-chart calculator if you know your birth time.

A note on spelling

The table is written in English letters, and spellings vary by region. If a name starts with a sound that is not in the table, this calculator says so instead of guessing.
